Всем настоящим и будущим любителям приключений посвящается…
"Are you ready, kids? - Aye aye, captain!!! - I can't hear you!!! - AYE AYE, CAPTAIN!!!" This song is from the famous animated movie "Sponge Bob." Let's conduct an experiment. Do you love adventures? Don't overthink it, what does your heart say? I'm sure most will answer "yes." So, are you ready to embark on a journey right now? And here, the positive responses will be much fewer, if any at all. What is holding you back? What worries, problems, or something else? Just don't tell me about money, you can travel on a minimal budget or even without one. Admit it, there's something missing inside you to just set off on a journey right away without hesitation? Call it what you want - recklessness, adventurism, impulsiveness, determination. But WE lack that! And "The Ice Sphinx" is all about those people who have more than enough of it. With the characters in the novel, you will travel back to a time when seafaring was the only way to reach another continent. And it was far from a walk in the park, but a harsh trial. Many places were still unexplored, and any such journey could end fatally. A common theme throughout the novel is the issue of trust between people. In a somewhat naive form, at times exaggerated, but still present, Jules Verne repeatedly demonstrates two opposites: to keep one's word despite all difficulties and adversities, and to betray one's companions at the first convenient opportunity. Throughout the reading, you find yourself thinking, how would I act in that situation. To be fair, such issues can be found in many other adventure genre authors, but it does not diminish Jules Verne's talent in the least. Of course, the book also features the author's trademark - the presence of "accurate" details: exact coordinates, distances, the use of maritime terminology, descriptions of flora and fauna, bold attempts to describe the climate in the South Pole. Equip an expedition, and you can recreate the route of the characters down to the minute. But that's not the most important part. Jules Verne also made room for imagination - what if the South Pole is not entirely covered in ice and has its own climate within the surrounding ice? Jules Verne's description of the South Pole is an act of directed imagination, not uncontrolled fantasy. Considering the level of scientific knowledge at the time of writing the book, Jules Verne fairly accurately described the South Pole with just one assumption. But that's not all. The main highlight of this book is the elegant inclusion of Edgar Allan Poe's novel "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket." The cherry on top of "The Ice Sphinx." What is the elegance of this inclusion? Jules Verne managed to quite realistically incorporate the story of Arthur Pym into his work, which was started and, according to critics, unfinished by Edgar Allan Poe in "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket." And this is not a simple mechanical reference. The fate of the key characters of Edgar Allan Poe was further revealed. So if you have read his novel, then you should definitely read "The Ice Sphinx" first and foremost. If you haven't read any adventure novels yet, I recommend starting with this one. Firstly, because the book is quite easy and quick to read, but at the same time, it is not devoid of the atmosphere of adventurism, so inherent in good adventure stories. Secondly, it's Jules Verne! If you haven't had the chance to meet him in your childhood, now is the time. You are constantly in a state of anticipation: will the main characters reach their goals, return home, how many disasters and troubles will still befall them - throughout the book, the reader, along with the characters, is immersed in a constant guessing game of fate. And it's mesmerizing. Additionally, the book will be useful for those who have not read "Moby Dick, or The Whale" yet. All these bramzels, marseilles, cabletows, rhumb lines, and buntlines are abundant in "The Ice Sphinx," but not in such vast quantities as in "Moby Dick." Therefore, it's an excellent preparatory book before joining the crew of a whaling ship under Captain Ahab. And finally, a little something to warm you up before your departure: Mix 300 grams of rum with water in a 1:4 ratio, sweeten slightly, and add citrus juice. This drink will give you the spirit of adventurism, but be sure to dilute the rum with water in the specified proportion, or else your head will spin so much that you'll be lying in the cabin for the entire journey. Citrus will protect you from scurvy, and sugar - for the bitter sailor's life. Fuel your adventurism twice a day - in the morning and at noon. Closer to the South Pole, use melted water from iceberg scraps instead of regular water to unite with nature and toughen your character.
