The most evil and cunning spirit of all was Kompolen — the Bog Spirit. He tangled everything into a mess, set traps, eavesdropped and revealed others' secrets, frightened from the eyeless thicket, led into deadly places, laid a path over the quagmire and suddenly disappeared underground, taking away forever those who walked upon it. The Mansi people struggled for a long time to see through and decipher the Bog Spirit Kompolen, to understand and not confuse him with another Spirit. Only the elders of the Mansi people, overcoming their Fear, deciphered Kompolen, delving into the secrets of Understanding.
"Kompolen is not a beast, not a human," said the wise fathers of the Mansi people. "It is the force of Evil, it is a monster. It is born where man deviates from the truth, where he secretly desires to serve the Darkness, where he secretly hides a small malice."
And when they deciphered it, they began to guess. Kompolen — the Bog Spirit — is half-man, half-beast. One leg of Kompolen is moose-like, with a flattened hoof, the other leg is horse-like, and Kompolen left behind two trails — either a herd of moose passed by, or a herd of horses galloped. Kompolen serves Fear and Darkness, penetrates the thoughts of men and the viscous thoughts of beasts.
